Two scanning methods

The right approach for your scan.

Your sonographer will use one or both methods, depending on what's being assessed. Everything is explained clearly before the scan begins.

Transabdominal

Through the abdomen

A jelly-covered probe is moved gently across your lower abdomen. Painless, non-invasive, and the standard starting method for most pelvic scans.

Transvaginal

Through the vagina

A long, thin probe is covered with conducting gel and a sterile sheath, then inserted into the vagina — giving a closer, more detailed view when needed.

What we look for

A pelvic ultrasound helps assess.

Your scan provides clear, detailed images of the female pelvic organs — and can support the diagnosis or monitoring of a wide range of conditions.

Womb & ovary assessment

Size, shape and position of the uterus, ovaries and surrounding structures.

Fibroids, cysts & masses

Detection and measurement of fibroid tumours, ovarian cysts and other masses.

Endometrial changes

Assessment of the endometrium — thickness, fluid, masses — including post-menopausal bleeding.

Coil position

Check the location and integrity of an intra-uterine device (coil/IUS).

Pelvic inflammatory disease

Imaging support for the assessment of pelvic infection or inflammation.

Fertility monitoring

Tracking ovarian follicle size and development as part of fertility assessment.

Bladder assessment

Changes in bladder shape and integrity, often as part of a wider pelvic scan.

Blood flow

Doppler imaging of the blood flow through the pelvic organs where required.

Cervical assessment

Length and thickness of the cervix as part of the pelvic exam.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions.

Who will be doing my scan?

Your scan will be performed by a qualified female sonographer from our experienced ultrasound team. If you'd prefer a male consultant ultrasonographer, Dr Piers Osborne is available weekly — the choice is yours.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book a women's health ultrasound directly. If you'd like to talk through your symptoms first, our GPs are happy to help — virtually or in clinic.

What happens during the scan?

You'll be asked to disrobe so the area being scanned is exposed, and to lie on an examination couch. A jelly-covered probe is then placed over the area being examined (transabdominal), or — if more detail is needed — a thin probe is inserted into the vagina (transvaginal). Your sonographer will explain everything as you go.

The whole appointment is around 30 minutes. Chaperones are available on request.

When will I get my results?

Your written report is emailed to you securely as a PDF, usually within 48 hours. Discounted GP follow-up appointments are available if you'd like to talk through the findings.

Do you offer breast scans?

No. We don't currently offer breast scanning. For breast-related concerns, please speak to your GP, who can refer you to a specialist service.

How should I prepare?

Wear accessible clothing that's easy to remove. For pelvis, bladder or kidney scans, please attend with a full bladder. For abdomen or liver scans, please fast for 6 hours before your appointment.

Where are appointments held?

Women's health ultrasound is delivered from our Newry clinic, where our specialist sonographer team is based.

Don't sit on uncertainty.
