How to prepare

A little prep makes for a better scan.

Most scans don't need much preparation — but a couple of areas do. Read the pre-booking instructions carefully and you'll have a smooth, quick appointment.

  • Abdominal & liver scans

Please fast for 6 hours before your appointment. Water is fine.

  • Bladder, pelvic & kidney scans

Attend with a full bladder — drink 1 litre of water 30–60 minutes before your scan.

  • Wear accessible clothing

You'll need to expose the area being scanned. Loose, easily removable clothing makes the appointment smoother.

Frequently asked

Ultrasound — your questions answered.

Is ultrasound safe?

Yes. Ultrasound is a non-invasive and safe imaging test that uses sound waves to show the internal structures of the body. There's no radiation, no needles, and no recovery time.

Do I need a GP referral?

No — you can book directly online or by phone. We do welcome referrals from GPs, consultants and physiotherapists if you'd like to bring one to your appointment.

Which clinics offer general ultrasound?

General ultrasound is currently available at our Belfast, Newry and Omagh clinics. Other clinics in the network offer specialist scanning services (women's, men's, MSK, Fibroscan, echocardiogram) — see the dedicated landing pages for each.

How long does a scan take?

General ultrasound scans take about 30 minutes — including time to prepare, the scan itself, and a brief chat afterwards. Your detailed report follows by email within 48 hours.

Do you scan children?

Our general ultrasound service is for adults aged 18 and over. Limited paediatric scanning (spine, skull) may be available — contact us to discuss.

Do you offer breast ultrasound?

No — we don't undertake breast ultrasound. For breast concerns please speak to your GP about onward referral.

Can I have my report sent to my GP?

Yes. Your PDF report is sent to you electronically and we can also forward it to your own GP if you'd like — let us know at the time of your scan.

Can I choose a male or female sonographer?

Yes. We have qualified male and female sonographers and you can request a preference at booking. For dedicated men's or women's ultrasound services, see those dedicated pages.
