How it works

Scan, diagnose, treat — often in one visit.

Most musculoskeletal injuries and pain can be assessed and — where appropriate — treated with an ultrasound-guided injection in the same 30-minute appointment.

1

Book directly

No GP referral required — but we're happy to receive referrals from physios, chiropractors, osteopaths or GPs.

2

30-min ultrasound

Your sonographer scans the affected area under real-time imaging — pinpointing the source of pain or injury.

3

Treat or report

If safe and appropriate, a guided injection can be given on the same visit. Otherwise, a written PDF report follows within 48 hours.

What we scan

From shoulder to ankle — and most things in between.

Ultrasound is particularly accurate for superficial and small structures — often more useful than MRI for many MSK problems. We scan the major joints, plus any lump, bump or area of muscle pain.

Upper limb

Any of these joints, or the muscles, tendons and ligaments associated with them and the arm.

  • Shoulder
  • Elbow
  • Wrist
  • Hand & fingers

Lower limb

Any of these joints, or the muscles, tendons and ligaments associated with them and the leg.

  • Hip
  • Knee
  • Ankle
  • Foot

Lumps, bumps & pain

Any unexplained soft-tissue lump, area of localised muscle pain, or a swelling that's worrying you.

  • Back of scapula
  • Finger lump
  • Plantar pain
  • Neck muscle lump

Ultrasound-guided injections

Gold-standard accuracy when an injection is the answer.

With ultrasound-guided injections, the sonographer can see the medicine reach the exact spot, every time. That's why guided injections are widely considered gold standard for joint, tendon and soft-tissue injections.

  • Joint effusion of the knee
  • Capsulitis of the shoulder
  • Tenosynovitis of the thumb
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Arthritic joints suitable for steroid
Please note: we don't inject the groin, neck or spine. Injections only proceed where the area is safe to inject and where an injection will genuinely help.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions.

Do I need a referral from a GP or physio?

No — you can self-refer for an MSK scan directly. We also happily accept referrals from physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths and GPs. If you're unsure whether a scan is the right next step, call us and we'll talk it through.

Where are MSK scans available?

MSK ultrasound scans are currently available at our Newry and Omagh clinics.

What happens during the appointment?

You'll be asked to disrobe just enough to expose the area being scanned, and to lie on an examination couch. A jelly-covered probe is then moved gently over the area. The whole appointment is around 30 minutes.

If an ultrasound-guided injection is appropriate and you'd like to proceed, it can usually be performed in the same appointment.

When do I get the results?

Your written PDF report is emailed to you securely within 48 hours. If you'd like to discuss the findings, discounted GP follow-up appointments are available by phone, video or in clinic.

Will I get an injection on the day?

Only if it's clinically appropriate. An injection is given when the area is safe to inject and when an injection will genuinely help with the problem. If it's not suitable, you'll only be charged the £140 scan fee — no pressure either way.

What areas can't you inject?

We don't inject the groin, neck or spine. For these areas a specialist referral is more appropriate.

When is ultrasound better than MRI?

Ultrasound is particularly accurate for superficial and small structures — often too fine for MRI to be effective. For most MSK problems, it's the better first-line investigation. We don't use ultrasound for the adult neck or spine — MRI is better suited there.
