How to Book Your Appointment

The 1st Mental Health Appointment is with a qualified GP and lasts 30 minutes.

This gives you enough time to fully discuss your concerns & expectations without making you feel rushed or uneasy. We are happy to deal with any mental health issue in this appointment.

Should you specifically wish to consult with a Male or Female GP – book a Men’s or Women’s Health appointment.

How Can We Help?

Our GPs take the time to listen. We can prescribe medication & arrange follow-up and monitoring should the need arise (standard 15 minute telephone, video or a face to face appointment in clinic).

We have access to a full suite of counselling, psychotherapy & psychology input from qualified & experienced clinicians.

Mental Health

It’s good to talk

It’s not always easy to start a conversation about your personal feelings; and it can be especially hard when you’re not feeling well. But it’s the first step towards working out what kind of treatment and support might help you.

Consider that it is easier sometimes to speak to someone who doesn’t know you. They have no preconceptions, no baggage.

If you are unsure whether to talk about how you feel, consider:

  • Try not to worry that your problem is too small or unimportant – everyone deserves help and your doctor is there to support you.
  • Be honest and open.
  • Focus on how you feel, rather than what diagnosis you might meet.
  • Try to explain how you’ve been feeling over the past few months or weeks, and anything that has changed.
  • Use words and descriptions that feel natural to you – you don’t have to say specific things to get help.

Our team of experienced GPs are here to help you.

All our GPs have been trained in the UK, NHS experienced & attained Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Depression

Depression is more than simply feeling unhappy or fed up for a few days.

Most of us go through periods of feeling down, but when you feel persistently sad for weeks or months, rather than just a few days it’s more than a passing phase.

Some people think depression is trivial and not a genuine health condition. They’re wrong – it is a real illness with real symptoms. Depression is not a sign of weakness or something you can “snap out of” by “pulling yourself together”. But, with the right treatment & support the good news is people with depression can make a great recovery.

Depression affects people in different ways and can cause a wide variety of symptoms: unhappiness, hopelessness, losing interest in things you usually enjoy, feeling tearful, lack of energy, sleeping poorly, no appetite for food or sex, aches & pains. A wide-range of mental & physical symptoms. Often depression goes hand in hand with anxiety, a feeling of persistent hyper-alertness & worry. In extreme circumstances you may feel that life is no longer worth living – these feelings should not be ignored.

Many people wait a long time before seeking help for depression, but it’s best not to delay. The sooner you see a doctor, the sooner you can be on the way to recovery.

Treatment for depression can involve a combination of lifestyle change, therapy and medication. Your recommended treatment will be based on how severe your depression is.

Anxiety & Stress

What is it?
Anxiety is a feeling of fear, dread, and uneasiness. It might give you physical symptoms such sweating a rapid heartbeat or you may be fidgety & restless. It can be a normal reaction to stress e.g. you might feel anxious when faced with a difficult problem at work, before a test or before making a stressful decision. The feeling of stress may help some – giving you a boost of energy or helping you focus but for people with anxiety disorders, the fear is not temporary and can be overwhelming.

When the symptoms interfere with daily activities such as job performance, schoolwork, and relationships we call this an anxiety disorder. These disorders include:

Phobias. People with phobias have an intense fear of something that poses little or no actual danger. Their fear may be about spiders, flying, going to crowded places, or being in social situations (known as social anxiety).

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). People with GAD worry about ordinary issues such as health, money, work, and family. But their worries are excessive, and they have them almost every day for at least 6 months.

Panic disorder. People with panic disorder have panic attacks. These are sudden, repeated periods of intense fear when there is no danger. The attacks come on quickly and can last several minutes or more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you refer to CAMHs or the Crisis Team?

No. If you need same day / urgent NHS psychiatric input we will be referring you via A+E where you would be assessed by the on-call team.

We are happy to prescribe for adults. Prescriptions for those under 18y.o of a mental health nature are never prescribed by GPs (either in the NHS or Privately) unless under the direction of a Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Consultant.

Yes, we have expedited access to a full range of consultant colleagues via our partnership with Kingsbridge Hospital Group – we can actually book your appointment before you leave the clinic!

No. We would recommend that your first appointment is face to face, but this is not always necessary. We would advise that you book 30 minutes to ensure the appointment gives enough time for you and the GP to explore fully your problems, concerns & expectations and make a sensible plan of treatment & follow-up. Further appointments with the same GP can be made by telephone, video or in-clinic dependent upon what you and the GP feels is necessary.

Yes we do. Though if mental health issues are severe in children secondary care (consultant) input is often needed. We won’t prescribe for children without consultant input. However, in most cases, children don’t need medication luckily and our first course of action is therapy.
