Do I need a GP referral?
No — you can self-refer for a Fibroscan directly. We also accept referrals from GPs, consultants and other clinicians. If you'd like to talk through your symptoms first, our GPs are happy to help.
Where are Fibroscans available?
Fibroscans are currently available at our Belfast, Newry and Omagh clinics, where our specialist sonographer team is based.
How do I prepare?
Please fast for 6 hours before your appointment. Small sips of water are fine. Wear something comfortable that allows easy access to your right side, where the probe will be placed.
Is it painful or invasive?
No. A Fibroscan is completely non-invasive and painless — no needles, no biopsy. A probe is placed against the skin and the scan itself takes less than 10 minutes.
How does it differ from a liver biopsy?
A liver biopsy is an invasive procedure that requires removing a small piece of liver tissue and usually an overnight hospital stay. A Fibroscan gives a similar level of information about liver stiffness in around 10 minutes, with no risks, no recovery time, and no biopsy-related sample-error issues.

Can the scan be repeated?
