Why the implant
A simple, reliable answer to a daily question.
Once in, you don't have to think about contraception again for three years. Increasingly chosen by women in their 20s, 30s and 40s who value the ease, dependability and rapid reversibility.
Over 99% effective
One of the most reliable forms of contraception available — no daily action required to stay protected.
Three-year lifespan
Set-and-forget protection that fits modern, busy lives — work, travel, family planning, whatever's next.
Quickly reversible
Have it removed any time — your fertility returns immediately, with no complication or hangover effect.
Suits more women
An option if combined contraception isn't right for you — e.g. migraines, certain medical conditions, or breastfeeding.
What we offer
Insertion, replacement & removal.
Each procedure is £150 — whether it's a first-time fitting, a top-up after three years, or removal when you'd like a return to fertility.
Insertion
£150 · 15–30 min appointment
First-time fitting under local anaesthetic. Effective within 7 days. You'll leave with clear aftercare guidance and the next three years sorted.
Replacement
£150 · combined appointment
Three-year top-up — your old implant is removed and a new one inserted in the same appointment, with no gap in protection.
Removal
£150 · 15 min appointment
Whenever you're ready — for planning a pregnancy, switching methods or any other reason. Fertility returns immediately on removal.
How it works
Slow-release progesterone, three different ways.
The implant — known as Nexplanon — is a small flexible plastic rod placed just under the skin of your upper arm. It slowly releases the hormone progesterone into your bloodstream.
It works in three complementary ways to prevent pregnancy:
- Prevents ovulation — stopping an egg from being released each month.
- Thickens cervical mucus — making it more difficult for sperm to enter the womb.
- Thins the womb lining — so an egg is less likely to implant.
Your appointments
A two-step pathway, properly explained.
We split things into a consent appointment first and the procedure second — so you have time to ask questions, understand the device and make an informed choice before anything is fitted.
Consent appointment
Approx. 15 minutes
A stand-alone appointment with a GP or specialist nurse. We'll take a full medical history, check for any contraindications and explain the device and procedure in detail — so you can decide what's right for you.
Implant procedure
Approx. 15–30 minutes
The procedure itself. We use local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort, then place the implant just under the skin on the inner part of your upper arm. You'll be in and out quickly, with clear aftercare guidance.
Knowing what to expect
Benefits & considerations.
Like any contraception, the implant comes with a balance of advantages and things to be aware of. We talk you through it all at your consent appointment.
Benefits
- Lasts up to three years and works within 7 days of fitting
- No interruption of sex; can be used during breastfeeding
- Can help with heavy or painful periods
- Suitable for those who can't take combined contraception (e.g. migraines, higher BMI)
- Fertility returns to normal as soon as the implant is removed
Considerations
- Periods may become irregular or stop completely (many see this as an advantage)
- Temporary side effects in the first few months — headaches, nausea, breast tenderness or mood changes
- Can cause acne to develop or worsen in some women
- Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- Some medicines may reduce its effectiveness — always tell your clinician
Frequently asked
The implant — your questions answered.
Does the implant hurt going in?
We use local anaesthetic to numb the area, so most patients feel only pressure during the insertion — not pain. You may feel some tenderness or bruising at the site for a day or two afterwards, which settles quickly.
How quickly does it start working?
The implant is effective within 7 days of insertion. If it's fitted within the first 5 days of your period it's effective immediately. Your clinician will advise on the best timing and whether you need to use additional contraception in the first week.
Will the implant be visible?
The implant sits just under the skin on the inside of your upper arm and is generally not visible. You'll be able to feel it if you press gently in that area — which is exactly how we'd want it to be, so it can be checked.
What happens to my periods?
Period patterns vary on the implant. Some women have lighter periods, some find their periods stop completely, and some experience irregular spotting — particularly in the first 3–6 months. Many women see this as a positive side effect.
Can I get pregnant straight after removal?
Yes. Unlike some other long-acting methods, fertility returns to normal immediately when the implant is removed — so you can plan a pregnancy as soon as you're ready.
Can I have it removed before three years?
Absolutely — at any time, for any reason. Removal is a quick procedure (around 15 minutes) at a cost of £150.
Does it protect against STIs?
No. The implant only protects against pregnancy. To reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections you'll still need to use a barrier method (such as condoms). If you have any concerns about STIs, our sexual health clinic can help.
