Two types of coil

Hormonal or copper — which suits you?

We offer a full range of hormonal coils (IUS) and copper coils (IUD). At your consent appointment we'll talk through your menstrual history, medical background and preferences to pick the right device for you.

Hormonal Coil (IUS)

Intra-Uterine System

A small, soft T-shaped device that slowly releases a low dose of progesterone locally into the womb. Particularly popular for women whose periods are heavy, painful or unpredictable — it often makes them lighter or stops them altogether.

  • Lasts 3–7 years depending on device
  • Works by Slow-release progesterone — thickens cervical mucus, thins womb lining, sometimes prevents ovulation
  • Periods Often lighter, shorter or stop completely
  • Best for Heavy or painful periods · women who can't take combined contraception
Lighter periods Hormone-based Full range stocked

Copper Coil (IUD)

Non-hormonal · Intra-Uterine Device

A small T-shaped device wrapped in fine copper wire. Completely hormone-free — the copper itself acts as a natural spermicide and prevents fertilisation. A great choice if you'd rather avoid hormonal contraception.

  • Lasts Up to 5–10 years depending on device
  • Works by Copper acts as a natural spermicide — prevents sperm from fertilising an egg
  • Periods May become heavier or longer, especially in the first few months
  • Best for Women who prefer hormone-free contraception
No hormones Immediately effective Works as emergency contraception

Transparent pricing

Insertion, replacement & removal.

Every coil pathway begins with a ÂŁ75 consent appointment so we can take a proper history, run any tests needed and choose the right device for you.

Consent appointment

£75 · ~15 min, face-to-face

Medical history, contraindications check, STD testing, urine pregnancy test and a clear explanation of devices and procedure — so you can decide what's right for you.

Insertion or replacement

£150 · ~15–30 min

The fitting itself — under local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort. Most women find it more pleasant than they expect, especially after a previous pregnancy.

Removal

£125 · ~15 min

Quick and straightforward whenever you're ready — planning a pregnancy, switching method or any other reason. Fertility returns to normal immediately.

Your appointments

A two-step pathway, properly explained.

We split things into a consent appointment first and the fitting second — so we can make sure the right device is chosen and that the procedure runs smoothly and safely.

1

Consent appointment

£75 · approx. 15 minutes · face-to-face

A stand-alone consultation with a GP or specialist nurse trained in coil insertions. We'll cover what's involved in the fitting and help you choose the right device.

  • Full medical history & contraindications check
  • Gonorrhoea & Chlamydia testing
  • Urine pregnancy test
  • Device selection based on your history
  • Procedure explained — benefits & side effects
2

Coil fitting

£150 · approx. 15–30 minutes

The procedure itself — similar to a smear test in feel. We use local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort. Most women find it more pleasant than they anticipated, particularly those who've previously given birth.

  • Local anaesthetic used to minimise discomfort
  • Coil inserted into the womb
  • Clear aftercare guidance
  • Ultrasound check on request
  • Evening & weekend slots available

Knowing what to expect

Benefits & considerations.

Like any contraception, the coil comes with a balance of advantages and things to be aware of. We talk you through it all at your consent appointment.

Benefits

  • Long-lasting — 5 to 7 years of continuous protection
  • No interruption of sex; can be used during breastfeeding
  • Hormonal coil can help with heavy or painful periods
  • Suitable when combined contraception isn't an option (e.g. migraines, higher BMI)
  • Fertility returns to normal as soon as the coil is removed
  • Copper coil offers a fully hormone-free option

Considerations

  • Periods may become irregular on a hormonal coil
  • Periods can be heavier on a copper coil — particularly early on
  • Fitting can be uncomfortable (local anaesthetic minimises this)
  • Coils don't protect against sexually transmitted infections
  • STD testing required before insertion (we run this on-site)

Frequently asked

The coil — your questions answered.

Does the coil fitting hurt?

The procedure can be uncomfortable, but we use local anaesthetic to minimise discomfort. Most women find the experience more pleasant than they'd anticipated — particularly those who've previously given birth, because changes to the cervix make insertion easier.

Why is there a consent appointment first?

The consent appointment gives us time to take your full medical history, check there are no contraindications, run STD and pregnancy testing, choose the right device for you and explain everything properly. It also gives you the space to ask questions without pressure before any fitting happens.

The consent appointment is ÂŁ75 and takes around 15 minutes, face-to-face in clinic.

What's the difference between hormonal and copper coils?

The hormonal coil (IUS) slowly releases progesterone into the womb. It's particularly popular with women who experience heavy or painful periods — periods often become lighter, shorter, or stop completely.

The copper coil (IUD) is hormone-free. The copper itself acts as a natural spermicide. Some women prefer it for that reason, though periods can become heavier — especially in the first few months.

We'll help you choose the right one at your consent appointment.

How long does the coil last?

Between 3 and 10 years depending on the device. Hormonal coils typically last 3–7 years; copper coils up to 5–10 years. We'll tell you the exact lifespan of your chosen device at fitting.

When can I be sure it's effective?

The copper coil is effective immediately on insertion. A hormonal coil typically takes about 7 days to become fully effective, so you may need to use additional contraception in the first week — your clinician will advise.

How do I check the coil is still in place?

Coils have small threads that hang into the vagina — you can feel for them with clean fingers to check. If you can't find them, or have any concerns, we offer same-day ultrasound at our clinics to confirm position quickly.

Can I get pregnant straight after removal?

Yes. Fertility returns to normal immediately on removal — there's no waiting period and no need to delay trying for a pregnancy.

Does the coil protect against STIs?

No. The coil only protects against pregnancy. To reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections you'll still need to use a barrier method (such as condoms). Our sexual health clinic is here if you'd like to talk through STI testing or prevention.

Ready to sort it for years to come?

Book a consent appointment with our GP or specialist nurse — we'll go through your options, run any tests needed and help you pick the right device.
